“Repent,” John the Baptist cried out, “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” He told the people of Judea that to prove their sincerity, they should provide good fruit. We should heed his call. To prepare ourselves for Jesus’ coming, we can begin with an examination of conscience. Let us see when and how we have failed to prepare good fruit and commit to bearing good fruit in the future.
Thank you for your generous support for the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development! As a parish, we raised $1,187.25 to support those who live on the margins and in poverty in the United States.
Next Saturday and Sunday, December 14th and 15th, the Third Week of Advent, I would like to invite you again to bring to the church for traditional blessing the Christ figurines from your home nativity sets. This is an old Roman custom of blessing the Christ Jesus figurines, called Bambinelli. It symbolizes the unity between liturgical actions here at church and traditions in our families where the nativity scenes are very commonly set up. This year I hope to bless even more Bambinelli than last year.
If you had not participated in the Giving Tree Advent Project, it is not too late. There are still cards on the tree. Please take one or more cards and bring your gift to the church. It may make the life of the homeless who benefit from this project more human and just joyful. Volunteers from Housing Forward will take them and distribute to the homeless.
St. Bernardine Parish is blessed to have three R.C.I.A. members who are looking for full communion with the Catholic Church. At the beginning of 10:30 Mass, we will celebrate Rite of Acceptance of our R.C.I.A. members Amanda Ball, Sheri Daniel, and Jennifer Portillo. Please keep our R.C.I.A. program and our catechumens in your prayers.
Our preparation for Christmas is a process that occurs in small steps toward the feast. The very important step is our participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation when we ask God for forgiveness and healing. The Advent Reconciliation Service will take place on Tuesday, December 10th at 7:00 pm. in the church. All are welcome.
Little Blue Advent Booklets, which invite us to reflect on the Scripture in this Advent and Christmas seasons, are still available at the church exits. Please take one.
May God bless all of us for two more weeks of Advent, our joyful preparation for Christmas.
