It’s time to choose sides. The selections from Jeremiah, Psalms and Luke each describe the favorable consequences for one group of people and the unfavorable consequences for the opposite group. Jeremiah distinguishes between those who place their trust in God and those who place their trust in others. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus reassures those who are suffering while warning those who are prospering. It is sobering. Let Saint Paul’s proclamation of Christ’s resurrection be a comfort to all of us.
Every year at this time parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago participates in the Annual Catholic Appeal. This year’s Appeal continues and expands last year’s theme: Come follow me… and share the Word. Followers of Jesus continue his mission in the world and they share his message. The Appeal enables us to share the Word in our support of schools, parishes in need, religious education programs, ministry formation, the protection of life, the promotion of peace and justice, and assistance to victims of natural disasters through Catholic Relief Services. Our 2019 goal is 6% of the previous year’s offertory income. For Fiscal Year 2017-2018, our offertory income was $297,674. Therefore, our target for the 2019 Appeal is $17,860.44. As you know, when contributors exceed the goal, St. Bernardine will receive a rebate of 100% of the funds donated over the goal. This weekend is Announcement Weekend. Next weekend is Commitment Weekend.
Fearon Hall Update.
As you may be aware, St. Bernardine will be renovating Fearon Hall and the Cafeteria in 2019. Without getting into too many details, Fearon Hall will see the largest part of the renovation (new floor, ceiling, walls, sound system). The hallways leading from the Hall to the Cafeteria will also be renovated, as well as the bathrooms. The plan is to start this project as soon as possible. We have selected a contractor, and he is undergoing the vetting process through the Archdiocese. Once approved, we are ready to start!
As a reminder, the funds for this project will come from our To Teach Who Christ Is campaign and parish savings.
Although Lent starts late this year, we have to think already about this season. Please bring your palms blessed on last Palm Sunday to the church upcoming weekends 2/24 and 3/3. These bunches will be burned for new ash which we will use on Ash Wednesday.
As we are going through challenging driving conditions, let us keep in our prayers those who drive asking God for their safety.
God bless you,
