During these days in the middle of the winter, when nights are long and sunshine can be scarce, we realize the value of the sun. It brightens our day and our mood. It gives life, warmth, and light. The light of Christ can do the same. With the light of Christ, we can bring light to the darkness in our world: injustice, violence, fear, poverty, and countless other shadows. Let us resolve to let the light of Christ shine forth wherever we go and whatever we do.
On Saturday, February 1, we welcomed back our annual Spaghetti Dinner! (We were unable to have the Spaghetti Dinner last year while the hall was under renovation.) I was happy to see nearly every table filled with family and friends. Everyone looked like they were having a great time! This year we served 54 pounds of spaghetti and 20 loaves of garlic bread, as well as a dinner salad. Let us not forget the plentiful desserts, which were thoughtfully donated by our parishioners! A lot of hard work goes into the planning and preparation of the Spaghetti Dinner, and I would like to thank Kathy Capron-Jankun who spearheaded this operation, along with her hard-working crew. They were: Jason Capron, Martha Capron, Karen Billington, Joe & Nina Bavone, Donna and Karl Gawlas, Nancy Isdale, Lisa Alvarez, Mary Johnson, Lucile Javier, Delores Vicencio, Eileen Cooney, Della DeSonia and Susan Famoyegun. Thank you all for a wonderful night!
Every year at this time parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal. This year’s Appeal continues and expands last year’s theme: Come follow me… and heal our world. The Appeal supports schools, parishes in need, religious education programs, ministry formation, the protection of life, the promotion of peace and justice, and assistance to victims of natural disasters through Catholic Relief Services. Our 2020 goal is 7% of the previous year’s offertory income. For Fiscal Year 2018-2019, our offertory income was $295,706.00. Therefore, our target for the 2020 Appeal is $20,699.00. As you know, when contributions exceed the goal, St. Bernardine will receive a rebate of 100% of the funds donated over the goal. Next weekend is Commitment Weekend. We will listen to Cardinal Cupich and fill out our appeal form.
Keeping in our prayers all those who are sick, let us ask God to keep us healthy in body and spirit.
God bless you.
Please bring your old blessed palms to church next weekend to be burned and used for new ashes on Ash Wednesday. Baskets for palms will be available at the church entrances.
