There is an urgency in today’s readings. Nineveh will be destroyed if people do not repent within forty days. Saint Paul tells the Christian community in Corinth that “time is running out.” Jesus proclaims, “This is a time of fulfilment. The Kingdom of God is at hand.” Deadlines can inspire us to action. As we listen to the readings today, imagine how the folks addressed by Jonah, Paul, and Jesus responded to this urgency.
The painting in the church vestibule is complete and it looks great! Building on this, the decision was made to paint the walls inside the church as well. The painting will go from the floor to just under the windows, and the colors will remain the same. The price quoted for this job is $970.00 and should be done in about one week.
St. Bernardine Parish received a letter of thanks from the Retirement Fund for Religious for our donation of $1,935.00. They assured us of the prayers of Religious, asking blessings upon our parish. Last week a second collection was taken for the Church in Latin America. We collected $1,005.60. Thank you for your generosity.
Some of you may have received a letter from Cardinal Cupich asking that you make a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. The “church” part of the Appeal will be organized in February. Please, respond as generously as possible.
Each year between the dates of January 18-25, Christians around the world are called to devote time to pray for unity among all Christians. We know that Jesus prayed for his disciples to remain one, as he and his Father are one, “that the world may believe” (John 17:21). Praying for Christian unity supports the task of evangelization, which is central to Renew My Church and one of the core priorities of the Second Vatican Council.
As we give thanks for all God’s blessings in the beginning of the New Year we ask for the gift of unity for all Christians and people of good will.
God bless you,
