Pastor’s Desk: March 18th 5th Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners,

Fr. Stanislaw Kuca

Fr. Stanislaw Kuca

A month ago, we received ashes on our foreheads as Lent began. We may have chosen to give up something or to do something special during this penitential season. Where do we stand now with that commitment we made? Have we slid back into our old ways from time to time? Have we totally forgotten about it? Well, it’s not too late. Always the Lord is calling us to follow him, no matter what has come before.

Next Sunday we will celebrate Palm Sunday. Palms will be blessed at all Masses next weekend. We will contemplate the Passion of the Lord listening to Mark’s Gospel.

Lenten Reconciliation Service is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. Often in life we need healing of mind and spirit. Reconciliation is a sacrament of healing where Jesus offers us mercy, forgiveness and peace. All we need is to come and be healed.

Those of you who participate in the Operation Rice Bowl, please bring your bowls to the Church on Palm Sunday or later in the Holy Week. Special baskets will be provided to collect rice bowls.

The last session of the Soup for the Soul will happen this Tuesday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Again, this year we will have a bus trip to visit seven churches on Holy Thursday, after Mass. There is a  sign-up sheet in the vestibule of the church this weekend.   If you are interested, please sign up as soon as possible, as the bus can only accommodate 46 people. This year’s itinerary is:  Divine Infant and Divine Providence, Westchester, St. John of the Cross, Western Springs, St.  Cletus & St. Francis Xavier, LaGrange, St. Barbara, Brookfield and St. Mary, Riverside.

This Friday we will continue to gather in the Church for the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m.  On Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross will be at 3:00 p.m.  Please find time and join me in this beautiful devotion.

Cardinal Cupich has sent a letter to me in which he thanks all parishioners of St. Bernardine Parish for our generosity in the 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal. Our goal in the appeal was $17,158.14. We raised $27,238.00. Total rebate of $10,079.86 was sent to our parish account and it will be used for maintenance.  Thank you all who contributed to the appeal.

As we approach Holy Week let us ask God for abundant blessings for ourselves, our family members and our St. Bernardine parishioners, especially for our sick parishioners who in a very special way are taking part in Jesus’ sufferings.

Fr. Stan
