Pastor’s Desk: March 8 2nd Sunday of Lent

Dear Parishioners,

Fr. Stanislaw Kuca

Fr. Stanislaw Kuca

During this penitential season, we make a conscious effort to avoid sin and be faithful to the gospel. In last Sunday’s Gospel Jesus journeyed into the desert and was tempted by the devil. Today Jesus climbs a high mountain on which he is transformed in front of his closest disciples. Whether isolated in the wilderness or accompanied by friends on a mountaintop, Jesus remains faithful to the will of God. May he be a model for us.

At all exits, you may find The Little Black Books and Operation Rice Bowl materials. If you didn’t have a chance to take them last weekend, feel free to take one today. They are very helpful in practicing prayer and almsgiving during Lent.

Here at St. Bernardine Parish, we have many events that give us a chance to sacrifice some time for prayer and so-called spiritual exercises. Every Friday we will have Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. On Tuesday, March 24 there will be a chance to experience God’s mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Saturday, March 28th will be a day of Kingdom Retreat. Soup For The Soul will take place on Thursday (3/12) and Tuesday (3/17) at 7:00 p.m. in Cafeteria.

Our RCIA members Amanda Ball, Sheri Daniel, and Jennifer Portillo were officially recognized as candidates to the full communion with the Catholic Church. This ceremony took place in the Holy Name Cathedral last Sunday. Congratulations  Amanda, Sheri, and Jennifer!

Also, congratulations to Katherine Brooker, Norah Brooker, Molly Lock and Maya Rice who last Sunday received their Confirmation.

Last weekend a second collection was taken for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. We collected $1,058.84. Thank you for your generosity.

As we begin our Annual Catholic Appeal for 2020, the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is winding down.  This week we received a check for $2,105.00 from the Archdiocese of Chicago.  This check is our final rebate for the 2019 Appeal, giving us a total rebate of $11,056.56.  To recap, our 2019 parish goal was $17,860.44.  $28,917.00 was pledged/paid, giving us a total rebate of $11,056.56.  (We received the first rebate of $8,951.56 in October.) Once again, I thank you and appreciate all that our parishioners do for St. Bernardine.

We ask God’s blessings for the second week of Lent and pray especially for those who are sick from coronavirus, asking for a successful recovery.

Fr. Stan
