Pastor’s Desk: September 1 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners,

We gather around the tab

Fr. Stanislaw Kuca

Fr. Stanislaw Kuca

le of the Lord on this Labor Day weekend to share a meal. Everyone is invited! Regardless of race, gender, culture, background, class, identity, income, or any other unnecessary source of division, we join together to celebrate this Eucharistic banquet. As we listen to Jesus tell a parable about invitations to a banquet while he himself is a guest at a dinner, let us consider our hospitality toward others.

Tomorrow we celebrate Labor Day.  There will be one mass at 9 a.m. in the church.  All are welcome.  This week Holy Hour will be moved from Monday evening to Tuesday evening. We will pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Next Sunday the 10:30 mass will be the opening liturgy for our Religious Education Program.  Vacation is ended, and new RE begins.  I’m very grateful to all involved in the RE Program here at St. Bernardine.  Your faith and willingness to share it with our students inspire me, and, I think, many other of our parishioners.  We keep all of you in our prayers.

God bless you,

Fr. Stan

During the absence of the pastor, some of our parish groups wish to share their activities with us in his column.  This week we welcome our SPRED Chairperson.

(Special Religious Development)

SPRED is the Archdiocesan-wide special religious education program for persons of all ages, 6 to 96, with developmental and intellectual disabilities.  Here at            St. Bernardine Parish, we host the SPRED Ministry for youth, ages 11 to 16.  Other centers host different age groups.

  •           children (ages 6 to 10)
  •           adolescents (ages 11 to 16)
  •           young adults (ages 17 to 21), and
  •           adults (ages 22 and older)

SPRED is not like other traditional religious education programs because our “friends” learn differently.  Through the sharing of life experiences and hands-on activities, along with prayer, simple discussions of religious topics and sacramental preparation, we help our “friends” to see God’s love and presence in their daily lives.

If you know of anyone you feel would benefit from participation in the SPRED Program or would just like to learn more about this unique ministry, please contact Helen Kreidermacher, St. Bernardine SPRED Chairperson, 708-771-3567.

While our St. Bernardine “friends” are ages 11-16, we have resources available to refer “friends” of other age groups to appropriate age-related centers.
